Consider Winter Field Day
Winter Field Day can be a great way to get hams involved and on the air. It takes place on the last weekend of January. Clubs can use it to help participants improve their preparedness for disasters and enhance their operational abilities in adverse conditions—or to just get on the air at a club or home station to help them be better CW, SSB or digital operators. It’s both a contest and a challenge.
The Emerald Amateur Radio Society, WA7FQD, in Springfield, Oregon recently invited their club members to the event they held at their station inside the Springfield Justice Center.
Though they’re a relatively small club, they had 14 people participate, four of whom were paired up with more experienced hams to Elmer those whose skills needed improving. Additionally, several experienced club members expressed thanks for being just being able to practice their skills. One member said, “You know, I’ve been a ham a long time, and have worked all states, but I was grateful for the practice because I’ve gotten a little rusty.”
