ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services)

OR Section ARES is broken into 6 Districts with each District has 5-7 counties. The Section Emergency Coordinator (SEC) works for the Section Manager (SM). The District Emergency Coordinators (DEC) work for the SEC. The Emergency Coordinators (EC) work at the county level and answer to the DEC & SEC. The ECs work with the county emergency manager (EM) to ensure that emergency communications are available in a time of need. The District map is depicted on the upper left.

The primary role of the SEC, ASEC’s, and DEC’s is to ensure that the local EC’s have the resources and support they need. They work as a team to accomplish this.  In the near future, there will be regular executive team meetings and all leadership meetings using Zoom.  The SEC also works with the Oregon Emergency Management Communications Officer to coordinate activities as needed.

Other groups, such as AUXCOM, ACES, RACES, ACS, and others, are invited to participate in ARES activities whenever they wish to.  Counties from neighboring states that may have cross-border communication needs are also invited to participate.

Training & Membership

The membership requirements below for ARES will be reviewed very soon by the ARES leadership team.  Some counties may count you as a member of the unit while you work on completing the standardized requirements below.

Membership for ARES in the OR Section consists of completing four (4) ICS courses: ICS-800ICS-700, and ICS-100, and ICS-200, plus one (1) ARRL course, EC-001.

Another requirement is to complete the OREGON ARES STANDARDIZED TRAINING PLAN.v1.7.4.2020.07.07. This document explains the various levels of membership and involvement, levels of responsibilities, and provides a checklist for topic/task completion.

Remember, training is important. In fact, it is the whole basis of our being a team…….no weak links, train, and make the team even better!

ARES Leadership & Units

The Oregon Section ARES team consists of 6 Districts and 22 active ARES counties/units.  The Oregon ARES leadership will not be operating in a strict hierarchical structure.  All levels of leadership will have a voice.  The new SEC will be working with the DEC’s to define their specific role.
